What is the role of a good shampoo? What should it not contain and how can you make the right choice?

The primary role of a shampoo is to clean your scalp and oil of all the dirt, oil, dandruff, pollutants, and other contaminants that might have gradually built up in your hair. And an ideal shampoo should do that without stripping your hair of its natural oils. Your shampoo isn’t supposed to be the solution to all your hair worries whether its hair fall, greying and hair damage -- its just supposed to clean your hair thoroughly.

How to identify whether your shampoo is free of harmful chemicals?

The three main chemicals to avoid are sulfates, parabens and silicones

How to identify harmful sulfates in shampoos?

Sulfates can clean the scalp, but they are not a necessary ingredient for shampoos. Many companies now offer sulfate-free shampoos by using organic alternatives like coco betaines, Disodium Cocyl glutamate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine (natural surfactants derived from coconut).

The commonly used sulfate ingredients that are found in beauty products include sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and in some cases, ammonium laureth sulfate (ALS) and Triethanolamine Lauryl Sulfate (TLS) are also found.

How to identify parabens in shampoos?

Parabens are used in the majority of beauty and cosmetic products as preservatives because they help prevent the growth of harmful mold and bacteria. But parabens aren’t as great as they seem. Studies have found that parabens can cause allergic reactions in people and they can even worsen your hair.

The most common parabens found in shampoos include propylparaben, methylparaben, benzylparaben, and butyl paraben. In some cases, they may even be listed in the ingredient list as alkyl parahydroxybenzoates.

Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are categorized as safe preservatives by Ecocert Greenlife by the Natural and Organic Cosmetic Certification body.

How to identify silicones in shampoos?

Silicones are used in shampoos to give you hair a luxuriously conditioned feeling. They can make your dry and damaged hair look completely healthy by filling the porosity of your hair. they form a thin hydrophobic (Waterproof) coasting around your hairs to protect it from moisture loss and other damage. This is however just an illusion and can make your hair lifeless in the long-term.

You can find silicone in the ingredient list with names ending in -cone, like Dimethicone Copolyol and Amodimethicone. Its best to opt for natural hair products that have naturally derived ingredients like plant hydrosol, plant protein, GHTC, Betaine, and Plant oils.
