The grain of the rice is very tiny and it gets its name for resemblance to cumin seeds, also called Seeragam/ Jeera in Tamil. The rice is known for its rich aroma and flickering taste which is also the unbeaten choice for biriyani. It has a very distinct taste, fluffs up well when cooked and south Indian biriyanis are made with this rice. It takes a long time to grow compared to other rice which also becomes a reason for the rice being costly. It has more fibre and anti-oxidants.
