The name translates to Big red rice in Malayalam and grows in the Wayanad district of Kerala which has a low GI. Chennellu is one of the medicinal rice of Kerala and is indigenous to Northern Kerala. Chennellu in the Kannur district is used to treat diarrhoea and vomiting.
Traditionally valiya chennellu is said to be particularly beneficial for women’s health. This rice is highly recommended for pregnant women and lactating mother because of its high iron content.

Soak for 6 hours to overnight and cook in 3 cups of water per cup of rice.
