The roots of these low GI varieties penetrate to a great depth into the ridges and are hence called "Varappu Kudainchan" (Varappu - Ridges; Kudainchan - Penetrator in Tamil). It is one of the traditional rice varieties of Tamil Nadu. It helps stabilize blood sugar levels, therefore it is an excellent food choice for those suffering from diabetes.
